Visual effects company Pixomondo -- whose recent credits include Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, Red Tails and Academy Award winning Hugo -- is opening a new base in Baton Rouge to service film, TV and commercial productions both locally and globally. The move representing an initial capital investment of $1.2 million.

A 6,000 sq. ft. Pixomondo facility is expected to open in May at Celtic Media Centre adjacent to the Raleigh Studios Louisiana. It was announced that the company plans to hire 50 people in its first year, expanding to 75 by the end of its second year, with annual salaries averaging an estimated $65,000 plus benefits.

The Frankfurt-headquartered company’s work is shared across a network of sites in Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Berlin, Los Angeles, Shanghai, Beijing, London, Munich, Burbank, Toronto, Hamburg and next Baton Rouge.

“Louisiana offers a very generous production tax rebate that we can pass on to our clients,” said Thilo Kuther, founder of Pixomondo. “We’ve already connected with the Louisiana State University science department to help set up remote render farms and virtualization with our other studios.”

The announcement was made Wednesday by Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, Baton Rouge Mayor-President Melvin “Kip” Holden and Kuther.
